The Two Kinds of Unpacking, and Which One You Want
Almost nobody explains that these are two different services, which is why people are disappointed. They are, and you should pick deliberately.
Unpacking onto surfaces is the traditional version. We take everything out of the cartons and set it out on worktops, tables and beds, grouped by room, and clear the bulk of the packaging away with us the same day. You decide where it all lives. It is quicker and cheaper, and it suits people who are particular about their own cupboards — which is most of us, in a kitchen.
A full unpack and put away goes the rest of the distance. Crockery into the cupboards, glasses into the cabinet, pans into the drawers, food into the larder, clothes onto rails and into drawers, books onto shelves. Things go away neatly and arranged, not just stacked on a counter. You come home to a house that works, not to a house covered in your own belongings.
Plenty of people mix the two: put away the kitchen and the bedrooms, onto surfaces for the study where only they know what goes where. Say so at the survey and it is quoted that way.

The Part an Organiser Cannot Do
Search for unpacking and you will mostly find professional organisers. They are genuinely good at what they do, but they are set up to arrive after the move, not to carry it out — which means the furniture has to already be standing before they can begin.
That is the whole difference. We dismantled the bed, carried it, and rebuilt it with its own fixings, which we labelled and kept with it. So the wardrobe is standing and the bed is built and made up before anyone opens a carton, and the unpack happens around finished rooms rather than around a pile of flat-pack waiting for someone else to come back.
It also means one firm is responsible from your old hallway to your new cupboards. We packed it, we carried it, we unpacked it — so there is no argument about which of two companies was holding the vase. Everything is covered while it is with us, and your written quote sets out exactly what applies.
What a Full Unpack Puts Away, Room by Room
Worth being specific, because "we unpack" means very little on its own.
Kitchen: crockery into cupboards, glassware into cabinets, pans and utensils into drawers, dry food into the larder, small appliances onto the worktop where you want them. This is the room that decides whether the house feels usable that night, and it is the one we would always do first.
Bedrooms: beds assembled, mattresses on, bedding made up, clothes onto rails and into drawers, wardrobes filled. Living rooms: books onto shelves, ornaments and pictures placed on furniture, lamps out and positioned. Bathrooms: everything out of the boxes and into the cabinets.
Then the cartons are flattened and the bulk of them go with us that day. What you are left with is a house you can cook in and sleep in on the first night, rather than a house you are camping in.
What We Do Not Do
Just as useful as the list above, and hardly anyone publishes it.
We will not decide what you should keep. Decluttering, wardrobe editing, home styling and designing bespoke storage systems are a different profession, and a good organiser is the right person for them — we are happy to say so. We do not hang pictures on walls or drill into anything; we will place them where they are going so the job is easy for you or your decorator. We do not assemble brand-new flat-pack furniture that has never been ours to dismantle, and we do not connect electronics or appliances beyond putting them where they belong.
Sealed personal boxes stay sealed, and paperwork in a study is left alone unless you specifically ask otherwise. If you would rather a room was not touched, say so and it is not touched.
Packing and Unpacking as One Job
Booked together, the two halves stop being two jobs. Every carton is labelled at the packing end with the room it came from and the room it is going to, and that labelling is written for the unpack rather than for the van.
For a chain break or a renovation the same logic runs through our own storage — packed by us, held in our containers, unpacked by us when the house is ready, with nothing handed between firms. Executors and families dealing with a probate move often use the same route, alongside house clearance for what is not going on.

We take the bulk of it with us the same day — the cartons we empty, the paper and the wrapping. If there is more than the van can carry, or you are still working through boxes yourself, we collect the rest whenever one of our vans is next in your area. Flatten them and leave them somewhere accessible and it costs you nothing.
Yes, and most people do. The kitchen is far and away the most common, followed by bedrooms and wardrobes — the rooms that stop a house feeling liveable. Studies and garages are usually the ones people keep for themselves. Tell us your priorities and we will work in that order, so if the day runs short the important rooms are already done.

It is the situation the service suits best. Unpacking is lifting, reaching, kneeling and standing on things — the parts of a move that are genuinely hard or unsafe to do alone, and they come at the end when everyone is already tired. Our crews are used to working with downsizers and with families handling a move on someone else's behalf, and we will work at whatever pace the day needs.
Yes, where we dismantled it. The fixings come off with the piece, labelled and bagged, so it goes back together with its own screws rather than whatever is in the bottom of a toolbox. Beds are the ones that matter — they get built and made up first, so that however far the day gets, everybody has somewhere to sleep.
It depends far more on how much you own than on the size of the house, so we will give you a straight answer at the survey rather than a guess here. As a rule the put-away version takes appreciably longer than the onto-surfaces version, and the kitchen alone can take a good part of a day in a well-stocked house. If the job needs a second day we will say so in the quote, not on the day.
