About Upper Beeding

Upper Beeding is a large village and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, sitting on the east bank of the River Adur where the river cuts its gap through the South Downs. Much of the village and parish lie inside the South Downs National Park, which is the planning authority for those parts. Beeding runs together with Bramber and Steyning on the opposite bank, and it is known as a walking, cycling and riverside base — the South Downs Way, the Monarch’s Way and the Downs Link all cross the parish — with Saxon and Norman roots and its own priory church.

The parish recorded 3,763 residents at the 2011 Census and also takes in the smaller settlements of Small Dole to the north and Edburton to the north-east. Locally the village is simply called Beeding, the ‘Upper’ setting it apart from Lower Beeding near Horsham. Despite the housing estates added since the 1960s, many timber-framed, thatched and Grade II listed cottages survive in the two conservation areas along the High Street and Hyde Street, and the fifteenth-century King’s Head is the oldest building in the village. St Peter’s Church, rebuilt by William de Braose in 1073 and once shared with the monks of Sele Priory, still stands at the heart of it.

Local knowledge still counts here, because Beeding’s old core was never built for a removal lorry. There is no railway station in the village; the nearest is Shoreham-by-Sea, roughly four to five miles south, on the coastway line.
