About Partridge Green

Partridge Green is a village in the civil parish of West Grinstead, in the Horsham District of West Sussex. It sits at the meeting of the B2135 and B2116, and the parish it belongs to — some 2,584 hectares taking in West Grinstead itself, Littleworth and Dial Post — counts Partridge Green as its largest settlement. Its post town is Horsham and its postcodes fall in the RH13 area. Today it is a working village with a High Street, a primary school and its own shops; for many people, though, the name is tied to the Dark Star Brewery, which moved onto the Star Road Trading Estate in 2010 before its closure was announced in 2022.

For all that it feels settled, Partridge Green is a comparatively young village. Until around 1840 it was a hamlet of roughly six houses; it only grew into a proper settlement after the Horsham-to-Shoreham railway, the Steyning Line, reached it in 1861, and St Michael and All Angels Church was built in the 1890s to serve the growing population. The village name comes from the Partrych family recorded here in 1332, while the older local name for the area was Jolesfield — still carried today by Jolesfield CofE Primary School. Something slightly more than 2,000 people live here now, in a mix of Victorian cottages and terraces around the High Street and near the old station, twentieth-century housing and newer development. On the edge of the village stands Lock House, a large Vernacular Revival house from around 1900, once linked to the singer Adele and reckoned among the most expensive homes in Sussex.

Getting around is all by road. The B2135 and B2116 carry traffic through the village, and the A24 a couple of miles west at Dial Post is the fast link — north toward Horsham, south toward Worthing and the coast. There is no railway station any more; the old one closed in 1966, and the nearest operational stations are at Horsham, roughly eight to ten miles north, with regular buses running from the village toward Horsham and Brighton. Henfield lies a couple of miles to the south-east for more shops and services.
