About Lancing

Coastal Grid, Northern Lane or New Estate — What Changes for the Van

Every property here brings a different practical problem on moving day, and we plan for the specific one rather than a generic access note. A ground-floor seafront flat is usually straightforward; a second- or third-floor flat above the same stretch of coast, with a narrow internal stair and no lift, means extra hands go on the stairs and, where the building allows it, we bring in a hoist rather than risk carrying oversized furniture round a tight turn. Brighton Road and the coastal-grid side streets, including roads such as Grand Avenue running back from the front, mostly rely on kerbside pay-and-display or permit bays rather than driveways, so the closest legal stop is confirmed at survey stage, not worked out on the day. Up on the older northern lanes, the ground rises noticeably as the roads climb toward the Downs and Lancing Ring beyond, and some of them are too narrow or too steep for a full-size lorry to turn in comfortably, which is when a shuttle vehicle earns its keep.

Moving to Lancing

The station opened in 1849 and sits on what is now the West Coastway Line, which runs along most of the Sussex and Hampshire coast, with trains from here running west through Worthing towards Chichester and Portsmouth, and east through Shoreham-by-Sea into Brighton — useful to know if a move involves a household arriving by train rather than by road, or furniture being delivered around someone else’s travel plans. Down on the seafront, Widewater is a rare brackish lagoon rather than open sea, tucked behind the beach on the Shoreham side and once the only known home of Ivell’s sea anemone, now thought extinct; Lancing Ring, a nature reserve in the South Downs National Park, sits on the high ground to the north for anyone trading a garden for open space instead.

Preparing for Your Lancing Move
