Cuckfield to Horsham Removal: Two Days, One Low Archway

Fully packed, carried in.

A Full Packing Removal to a Horsham Town-Centre Flat

In October 2026 we moved a client from a cottage in Cuckfield (RH17) to a flat in Horsham town centre (RH12). It was a full packing service and removal booked over two days. On the first, our crew packed the home and part-loaded the van; on the second, they loaded the rest, drove to Horsham and unloaded. Two crew worked both days, with one Luton van.

It was a small job, about 980 cubic feet of furniture and boxes. The Horsham end is what makes it worth writing up: the van could not get to the front door, because the archway leading to the flats’ entrance is too low for it.

How the two days ran

Day oneCuckfield

  1. Pack. The crew packed the home, with clothes in wardrobe hanging cartons.
  2. Load. The crew part-loaded the van, with carpet and mattress protection supplied for the move.
  3. Leave out. The essentials for the night.

Day twoCuckfield to Horsham

  1. Finish. The essentials packed and loaded.
  2. Drive. About 12 miles to Horsham town centre.
  3. Park. On the street, near the archway.
  4. Carry. Everything through the archway and unloaded at the flat.

Day One: Packing the Cuckfield Cottage

A full packing service means the client packs nothing. We supply the boxes and packing materials, and the crew packs and loads. On this move that included wardrobe hanging cartons, so clothes travel on a rail rather than folded into boxes, plus carpet protection and mattress protection.

The two days were set out in the quote, which gave the packing a day of its own. By the end of day one the van was part-loaded, and only what the client needed overnight stayed out, to be packed and loaded on day two.

Day Two in Horsham: When the Van Can’t Reach the Door

If a removal van can’t reach your door, the crew parks where it legally can, nearby, and carries everything the rest of the way.

That is what happened in Horsham. The way to the flats’ entrance is through a brick archway that is too low for a Luton van, so the van could not get to the front door. Our crew parked on the street near the archway and carried everything through it, with a sack truck to help.

Tell your remover before the day

  1. Any arch, gate or barrier between the road and your door, and its height if you can measure it.
  2. Roughly how far it is from where a van can stop to your front door.
  3. Steps, stairs or a lift at either home.
  4. Bollards, narrow lanes or a tight turn on the way in.
  5. Any rules from your building’s managing agent, such as set times for access or for using a lift.
  6. A photo of the approach from the road.

On public roads, the Department for Transport’s Traffic Signs Manual says any structure with less than 5.03 metres (16ft 6in) of headroom should be signed. An archway on private land is not a public road, so do not rely on there being a sign.

Parking a Removal Van in Horsham

Horsham District Council’s guidance is that a removal van can stop on yellow lines to load or unload without a parking suspension, as long as it is not causing an obstruction and the loading is continuous.

There are limits. West Sussex County Council’s parking policy rules out loading where yellow marks on the kerb show a loading ban at the times on the nearby plates, and at bus stops, taxi ranks, clearways, school zig-zags, doctor or ambulance bays and suspended bays. Loading on yellow lines is allowed “provided that it is impractical to conduct these activities elsewhere”, and the van should be near the premises, “but not necessarily directly adjacent”. An enforcement officer watches a commercial vehicle for 10 minutes to see whether loading is going on.

Parking bays are different again. Central Horsham is inside the town’s controlled parking zone, also called a resident parking zone, which is split into zones A to F with their own hours. Zone A runs 9am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday, and some others are two-hour windows such as 10am to 12pm. To keep a bay free for the van, a parking bay suspension is booked with Horsham District Council, and it must be approved. If your move needs one, we make the application, as our house removals in Horsham page explains.

How to suspend a parking bay in Horsham

  1. Book a parking bay suspension online at least 5 working days before the day it is needed.
  2. One bay is about 10 metres, usually two car spaces.
  3. For a permit, pay and display or shared-use bay in Horsham’s controlled parking zone, it costs £45 a bay plus £10 a day, so £55 for one bay for one day. Confirm the price when booking.
  4. Signs go up about a week before. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead, or there is no refund.
  5. The council has no power to remove a car parked in the bay, so tell your neighbours.
  6. To change or cancel a booking, Horsham District Council Parking Services: 01403 215057.

Two more things for a town-centre flat. Sections of West Street, East Street and the Carfax have been pedestrianised, the council’s 2022 conservation area appraisal records, so plan where the van will stop. And if your flat comes with private parking on a private road, the council says you may not qualify for a resident parking permit.

At the Cuckfield end of this move, the van fitted on the drive. That is not a given in Cuckfield: the village centre has been a conservation area since 1969, and Mid Sussex District Council’s 2006 appraisal says drivers of lorries and large vans “experience severe problems making deliveries to shops and restaurants” there. That was written about shop deliveries, but the narrow centre is worth planning for on a move too.

How the Cuckfield to Horsham Move Was Priced

We priced this Cuckfield to Horsham move, about 980 cubic feet over about 12 miles, at £1,485 plus VAT, £1,782 including VAT. That covered two crew for two days, one Luton van, all the packing materials and the packing itself, and the move to Horsham.

Our full unpacking service was offered as an optional extra at £550 plus VAT: a crew comes back the day after the move, unpacks with you and takes the packing materials away.

Every move is priced on its own volume, access and distance, so treat this as one real example from October 2026, not a price list.

Cuckfield to Horsham Removal: Two Days, One Low Archway — FAQs

Wolves Removals priced this move, a small job fully packed by two crew over two days with one Luton van, at £1,485 plus VAT (£1,782 including VAT). About 980 cubic feet went about 12 miles from Cuckfield to Horsham town centre. Your price depends on volume, access and the service you choose.

About 12 miles. The fastest road route leaves Cuckfield on the B2036 and B2114, follows the B2115 through Warninglid, with a short stretch of the B2110, to Lower Beeding, then takes the A281 into Horsham.

The crew parks where it legally can, nearby, and carries everything the rest of the way. On this move a low archway kept the van on the street in Horsham. Tell your remover about arches, gates and narrow lanes before the day, so the crew and the time are planned for the carry.

Usually, yes. Horsham District Council says a removal van can load or unload on yellow lines without a suspension, if loading is continuous and it causes no obstruction. West Sussex County Council’s policy allows it only where loading elsewhere is impractical, and never where kerb marks show a loading ban or at bus stops, taxi ranks or clearways.

Book a parking bay suspension online with Horsham District Council at least 5 working days ahead; it must be approved. For a permit, pay and display or shared-use bay in Horsham’s controlled parking zone, it costs £45 a bay plus £10 a day: £55 for one bay for one day. If we are moving you, we make the application.

For a Band D home in 2026/27, yes. Horsham town’s Band D charge is £2,408.22, which is £142.67 a year less than Cuckfield parish’s £2,550.89, before discounts. Horsham District Council collects it in Horsham and Mid Sussex District Council in Cuckfield.

Splitting a fully packed move gives the packing a day of its own. With two days booked, the first is spent packing and part-loading, and the essentials stay out overnight. On day two the crew collects the remaining essentials, drives and unloads everything at the new address.

Register for council tax with Horsham District Council (online, or 01403 337800, Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm), register to vote on GOV.UK, and check your bin day with the council’s postcode search. West Sussex County Council stays the same.
