Moving to Bognor Regis: The Practical Guide

Relocating to Bognor Regis is straightforward enough once you know how the place works: which schools take which villages, how the branch line actually behaves, who empties your bins, and what a house costs in Aldwick against North Bersted. Getting around: the commute in practice

Bognor Regis sits at the end of a short branch off the West Coastway line, and that single fact shapes every journey you will make by train. There is only one station on that branch — Bognor Regis itself — so Barnham, three and a half miles up the line, is the first stop and the junction where everything else connects.

London is the easy one. Southern runs direct trains to London Victoria in about 1 hour 50 minutes, with roughly 34 departures on a weekday. Gatwick is also direct, at about 1 hour 13 — useful if you fly often.

Everything west and east means changing. There is no direct train to Chichester: you change at Barnham, which sounds worse than it is, because Bognor to Barnham is about six minutes and Barnham to Chichester about seven, so the whole trip runs around twenty minutes. Portsmouth works the same way, at about an hour and twenty minutes all in. Brighton has a handful of direct services — three on a typical weekday, about 1 hour 15 — but changing at Barnham is usually quicker and far more frequent.

By road, the A259 is the coast road, running west to Chichester and east towards Littlehampton and Worthing. The A29 heads north out of town and meets the A27 at the Fontwell roundabout, about six miles up. Chichester is roughly seven miles away: a fifteen-minute run when the road is clear, closer to half an hour in the morning peak. Gatwick is about an hour by car; Southampton Airport is actually nearer at around 45 minutes, though less well connected by rail.

Buses are better than most towns this size manage. Stagecoach's Coastliner 700 runs up to every fifteen minutes between Chichester and Bognor Regis, around the clock on that stretch, and continues towards Felpham, Yapton and Littlehampton every half hour.

Schools in Bognor Regis and its villages

The town has two secondary schools of its own. The Regis School on Westloats Lane is a United Learning academy for ages 11 to 19 with its own sixth form, judged Good at its inspection in March 2023. Felpham Community College on Felpham Way is an 11 to 18 community school, also with a sixth form, judged Good in October 2024. Just outside the town, St Philip Howard Catholic School at Barnham and Ormiston Six Villages Academy at Westergate both take Bognor Regis families.

Primary provision is spread across the town and the villages. Rose Green Junior School was rated Outstanding in June 2024, with Rose Green Infant School rated Good in September 2023 — between them they serve Pagham, Nyetimber and Rose Green families. In Felpham, Downview Primary School was rated Good in November 2024 and Bishop Tufnell CofE Primary Good in September 2022. Closer to the centre, Bartons Primary School was Good in February 2025, Nyewood CofE Junior Good in March 2024, and Edward Bryant School Good in February 2023.

Read any rating with its date attached. Ofsted stopped issuing single-word overall grades in September 2024, and from November 2025 replaced graded inspections with report cards scoring several areas separately. A school inspected recently may have no headline word at all, and third-party school-comparison sites are often still showing a grade that has since been superseded. Check the current report on the Ofsted website before you commit to a catchment.

For sixth form, both town secondaries and St Philip Howard run post-16 provision. There is no further education college in Bognor Regis itself — the nearest is Chichester College, about six miles away.

Applying for a school place mid-year

If you are moving in outside the normal admissions round, you apply for an in-year place. For community and controlled schools that goes through West Sussex County Council's online in-year application form; academies, voluntary aided and foundation schools set their own admissions, so you apply to those schools directly. The county aims to process applications within ten school days and suggests applying about four weeks before you want your child to start.

You will need proof of your West Sussex address — ownership documents or a signed and dated tenancy agreement — so it is worth having that ready rather than waiting for it to be asked for. Wolves Removals

The property market, village by village

The villages carry a clear premium over the town centre, and the order rarely changes. On Rightmove's figures for the year to April 2026, Aldwick averaged £410,052, Pagham £380,609 and Felpham £377,479, against £346,797 for Bognor Regis itself.

Property type matters as much as postcode here. In Bognor Regis, detached homes averaged £495,953 while flats averaged £167,068 — a wide spread, and the reason the town's headline average can mislead. A detached house in Aldwick and a seafront flat in the centre are different markets that happen to share a town name.

New homes are concentrated on the edges of the town rather than in it — north towards Bersted and Barnham, west towards Pagham. As of August 2026, Taylor Wimpey is selling at Regis Park and Bellway at Spindrift Park, both in Pagham; Barratt and David Wilson Homes share the Nursery Fields site at North Bersted and Century Gardens at Barnham. Availability moves week to week, and sites that appear in search results are often already finished — Bersted Park, still widely cited as new, sold out some time ago. Check directly with the developer before you plan around one.

Renting before you buy

Plenty of people moving to the coast rent for six months first, and it is a sensible way to learn which street you actually want. Figures for the town alone are not published, but across the wider Arun district average private rents stood at £1,227 a month in June 2026, up 3.3% on the year — £846 for a one-bedroom home, £1,136 for two bedrooms and £1,390 for three. That sits meaningfully below the England average of £1,446.

Council tax, bins and the admin

Bognor Regis sits in the Arun district, and three authorities appear on your bill. Arun District Council collects the council tax and runs your bin collections. West Sussex County Council is responsible for schools, roads, social care and libraries. Bognor Regis Town Council adds its own precept.

For 2026/27, Arun's own share of a Band D bill is £221.04 a year, a 2.99% increase agreed in February 2026. The full Band D bill for the Bognor Regis parish, once county, police and town precepts are added, is £2,538.99 — and it varies by parish, so a figure quoted for one village will not match another.

Bin collections changed on 13 April 2026, which catches out anyone working from older advice. Households now have a weekly food waste collection — a small indoor caddy and a grey outdoor bin with an orange lid — alongside fortnightly general waste and fortnightly dry mixed recycling. Garden waste remains a paid subscription. Collection days were re-routed when the change came in, so look yours up on the council's postcode search rather than assuming your new street keeps the day your neighbours mention.

Healthcare: GPs, hospitals and A&E

The nearest accident and emergency department is at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, about six miles away, run by University Hospitals Sussex. The town has its own community hospital, Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital on Shripney Road, which is not an A&E but does run a walk-in minor injuries unit on weekdays, along with X-ray and a range of outpatient services. Opening hours for the minor injuries unit change from time to time, so check before travelling rather than relying on a guide like this one.

Register with a GP as soon as you have an address. Practices here fill up in the same way they do everywhere on the south coast, and doing it in your first week rather than your first month is the difference between choosing a surgery and taking what is left.

A sensible timeline for the move

Eight weeks out. Book your removals firm — good crews on the coast are committed well ahead in summer, when Bognor's holiday traffic makes tight scheduling harder for everyone. If children are changing schools, start the in-year application now rather than after you arrive.

Four weeks out. Tell Arun District Council your move-in date so the council tax account opens cleanly, arrange your utilities, and set up mail redirection. Moving week. Confirm parking for the lorry. Register with a GP. Check your bin day on the council's lookup, and find out which bins came with the house.

First fortnight. Register to vote, update your driving licence, and take a proper walk around whichever village you have landed in — the coast path, the harbour, the high street. People who settle here quickly are usually the ones who used the place straight away rather than waiting for the boxes to clear.
