About North Chailey

North Chailey is the northern of the four settlements that make up Chailey civil parish, in the Lewes District of East Sussex. It gathers around the staggered crossroads where the A272 crosses the A275, roughly 7 miles north of Lewes and about 45 miles south of London, in the BN8 postcode. It is best known for Chailey Common — one of the largest areas of common heathland in south-east England — and for the smock windmill on Red House Common, which stands beside the yew tree traditionally said to mark the centre of Sussex.

The historic core lies south at Chailey Green, a conservation area holding the Grade II* Parish Church of St Peter, with parts dating from the 13th century, and the Five Bells, a public house thought to be 16th century and once one of the coaching inns on the A275, the historic Lewes-to-London road. North Chailey itself mixes older buildings with 20th-century detached and semi-detached houses strung along the main roads and the site of the old railway station.
